IFLA APR April Talk & Share - Towards Sustainable Futures: Bridging Circular Cities and Landscape Architecture Landscape Architects are instrumental in implementing circularity concepts, using their expertise and technical skills to "bridge" the natural and cultural environment. In a circular economy, markets incentivize product reuse over disposal, minimizing the demand for extracting new resources. This strategy optimizes natural resource usage, fuels innovation, increases employment, cultivates new capabilities, and promotes environmental preservation. To achieve sustainable urban development and enhance livability, it includes integrating Circular Economy principles into resource management. This month, IFLA APR will spotlight Circular Cities and the Circular Economy, emphasizing their significance to Landscape Architecture. This session aims to: 1) Introduce the concept of Circular Cities and the Circular Economy model. 2) Showcase innovative projects that exemplify the Circular City concept, analyzing the underlying principles of the Circular Economy model. 3) Examine how landscape architects incorporate Circular Economy principles into their projects, highlighting effective implementation strategies and real-world applications.

🌱 Elevating Landscape Architecture: Bridging the Gaps Toward a Circular Future As landscape architects, we've always been at the forefront of ecological and sustainable design. Our training equips us to integrate the natural environment with human habitats creatively and sustainably. However, as we aim to align more closely with the evolving principles of circular design and urban resilience, there are new competencies we need to develop and areas where we can deepen our expertise. 🔍 Key Areas for Development: 1. Advanced Material Technology: Staying updated with the latest sustainable materials and technologies is crucial. It's time to deepen our engagement with material scientists and innovators to utilize cutting-edge, eco-friendly materials in our projects. 2. Systems Thinking: We excel in designing within ecosystems but can improve our approach to integrated urban systems thinking. Collaborating more intensively with urban planners and engineers can help create solutions that are effective at multiple scales. 3. Quantitative Analysis Skills: Quantifying the environmental and economic impacts of our designs is increasingly essential. Training in environmental impact assessment and mastering cost-benefit analysis are pivotal for our profession's future. 4. Policy Influence: We need to shift from adapting to policies to influencing and creating policies that foster sustainable urban environments. 5. Technology and Data Utilization: Leveraging advanced tools like GIS and remote sensing can significantly enhance the precision of our designs and our ability to monitor long-term impacts. 🌿 Why This Matters: Adapting to these areas not only enhances our capacity as landscape architects but also positions us to lead in the creation of adaptive, resilient urban spaces. It's about preparing ourselves to meet the challenges of today while paving the way for sustainable solutions that future generations will inherit. Let's discuss how we can bridge these gaps and elevate the role of landscape architecture in building sustainable, circular cities. What changes do you think are most crucial for our profession right now? #LandscapeArchitecture #Sustainability #UrbanDesign #CircularEconomy #ProfessionalDevelopment #CircularCities Join me in conversation at the IFLA Asia Pacific Region Talk and Share on 25 April 7pm Singapore time. Feel free to engage with this post by sharing your insights, experiences, or questions about the evolution of landscape architecture in the context of circular and sustainable urban development. Let's drive the conversation forward together!
