Dear Subscriber,

The World Health Organisation has declared the Covid-19 outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, as the virus is now spreading rapidly outside of China. What does this mean for us? Considering this pandemic situation, will the role of landscape architects to provide quality landscape spaces become even more important? For those who experienced being in quarantine or being issued a 14 days stay-home notice, getting outdoors or being in nature for a breath of fresh air would likely be the first thing desired. How would we rethink living spaces if we knew that these spaces would be even more appreciated and desired during a time like this? How would we bring back communities and build social cohesion again when there is intense fear of being mixed in crowds now?

This is the time we invite you to think deeper about the performance of landscape architecture and the responsibilities landscape architects hold in the era of climate change and in the unprecedented period of the current disease outbreak to build community resilience. As the IFLA AAPME Awards 2020 submission deadline draws to a close in March, the global call for resilience building should continue in the veins of every landscape architect and be embedded in the works we do.

I wish you all well.

Stay healthy. Stay safe.

Damian Tang
Chair, Finance and Business Planning Committee, IFLA APR
Immediate Past President of IFLA APR
