Dear Subscriber,

Happy new year to you!

A new year usually brings us happy and hopeful feelings, but this year is different. Global warming starts to seriously affect us and many people are suffering. A current major issue is a series of bushfires in Australia, and it's now stretching to an unprecedented scale. We are sorry for huge losses of people, wildlife and the living environments and our heart goes out to everyone who is affected.

We should remind ourselves with our professional responsibilities to humbly consider what has happened, think how we can contribute through our way of living and professional works, and continue discussing this until we reach the point where clear action will be taken at all levels. In August this year, IFLA World & APR Congresses will be held in Penang, Malaysia and this will be a great opportunity to undertake the above process.

The current environmental situation reminds us of the descriptor ‘Ring of Fire’ which indicates the pan-pacific region where IFLA APR is based, meaning an area with high risks of earthquakes, tsunami and typhoons. Now, bushfires have been added to the list. Facing such demanding circumstances as a region, we encourage all of you to have a fresh determination to move forward in this challenging year.

Now moving forward, we are pleased to present to you the first issue of the new year!

With very best wishes,

Takano Fumiaki
President of IFLA APR
